There’s a meditation technique for people who have to commute (but not driving themselves). It’s a good alternative for people who want to meditate but can’t find time.
This is a technique from the 5000 years old ancient Tantra text called Vigyana Bhairava Tantra, which contains hundred and twelve Tantra techniques to discover the mystery within.
In our daily life, commute is a time between places, between home and work, and between stress and relief. This is a great in-between space to experience joy and peace.
Meditation is not about any thought in particular. In fact, it’s not about any thought at all. A state of existence where the mind has no thoughts…the state of no-mind. So, while the description of the meditation uses words, try to follow along by understanding the intention.
This meditation can last anywhere from twenty minutes to as long as your ride is. We will relax into our body, and shift to a natural breathing pattern, to have a state of relaxed alertness not sleepiness; we will become more intensely aware of our surroundings. We will draw our attention to the environment, the sights, sounds and vibrations of the vehicle we are contained inside of.
By relaxing the body and the breath, but staying alert to the entirety of our commuting experience, we will reach a meditative state where we become aware of an existence that’s different from our thoughts, breath and body. That’s dhyana.
